About Don Miller

A lifetime Las Vegas resident and father of three grown children, Don spent 15 years as a licensed psychotherapist and speaker in private and hospital practices. Prior, he was part owner of an award-winning family advertising agency. Having fallen into addiction to crystal methamphetamine several years ago, losing everything to the drug, he has been clean since 9/4/11 and more sober about life with each passing day. The stories and content of this site are the accumulating epiphanies of his journey into sobriety, shared here to inspire others, especially those who remain embroiled in addictive battles of their own. Don is currently a life coach, author, speaker and manager at a non-profit, HopeLink of Southern Nevada.

check, recheck.

After a quick self-check, I realized how much I’m missing.

There are giant empty holes I’ve never been able to fill.

Social holes, mental acuities, physical abilities, so many key areas of my life that with the time I have left, will likely remain empty with me when I take a hike to heaven.

It worries me a little now because what if I need something more while I’m still here and I don’t have what it takes?

Then I remember David, the scrawny kid who singlehandedly dropped a giant.

God intervened on his behalf even when he was voted least likely to succeed.

Then I remember Jonah, three days in the whale’s belly with a stutter, worried if he could resume his prophetic ministry once he was spat out in Nineveh.

Then I remember Daniel, the certain lunch for a pride of hungry lions.

Then I remember Shadrach, Meshach and Abed Nego in the convection oven.

Then I came to the conclusion that when God calls us to accomplish, He also equips.

We are mistaken to believe we’ll ever enter heaven complete, for it is heaven that completes US.

After a quick re-check, I realize how much I have with a God who supplies all my needs when they’re needed.

grow up.

And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭22‬ ‭NIV‬‬

until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Like growth from newborn to a mature adult, the human path is predetermined, yet we throw tantrums at each new stage refusing to fully grow up as if it were even an option in our wheelhouse.

The pathway exists for two reasons: God’s best plan for us is to build resilience through maturity for the life ahead, and two, at some point in our life, others with vision will be spending their days on the big picture and their purpose in it with little time or tolerance for those without.

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Strong, mature believers make smart warriors against the insidious evils of this world that would otherwise consume babies and toddlers alive.

Ain’t nobody got time for dat.

Growing up isn’t optional.

If you’re not compelled to by the kingdom vision, you’re destined to become a burden for others who expect more, and rightfully so.

Grow up.

the new world order.

I attended a talk yesterday which defined, very prophetically, how the world as we know it is changing.

AI and rapidly advancing technologies will accomplish many wonderful things to come, but also enables those who control it to easily convert truths to lies and realities to fantasies.

Deep fake videos, better and more convincing arguments for or against something beyond what any human can conceive or articulate, automated everything.

The fabric of society will be rewoven into an unrecognizable something that most of us aren’t ready, willing or able to comprehend.

The talk was very convincing and unnerving with evidences of its veracity more plain each day.

Ushering in the New World Order isn’t on the horizon.
It IS the horizon.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is gonna be a fast ride.

the big picture.

Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The big picture.

It’s easy to lose sight of it.

We are a myopic people whose vision is so nearsighted, focused so much on our immediate wants and indulgences of the day, that we overlook the bigger purpose of why we’re actually here among another 8 billion souls.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

What are you sowing? Where are you applying your gifts, the unique handiworks of God? On what do you waste your time, energy and resources for indulgences and other selfish pursuits?

The bigger picture awaits your attention. And time is passing.

Grasp it and your purpose in it. Focus your everything on it while we still have time.

burdens vs. loads

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6‬:‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

As a psychotherapist for 15 years, I learned early on the difference between carrying the burdens of others and letting them carry their own loads (Gal 5)

Buildings have walls that carry some weight of the roof but aren’t critical to the task as are load-bearing walls, without which, the structure would collapse.

Likewise, helping someone through a crisis eases their burden when we help bear some of their weight but acknowledge the load-bearing is theirs alone to carry.

People would ask me how I could hear such tragic stories in my therapy office all day and still sleep at night.

This burdens vs loads analogy was key to maintaining my own mental health while still being a helper to my patients.

If you find yourself all consumed when helping a friend through their troubles, knowing which of their weight-bearing walls are within your purview and capacity to carry and which are not might make all the difference for you to continue being an effective helper.

obscurity.

Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may have zeal for them.

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4‬:‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

With belief and faith as the central tenet of Christianity, it comes as no surprise that the strategies formed against us are to obscure truth, to plant seeds of doubt, and to take what is clearly evident and then gaslight us to the contrary.

It’s actually a brilliant strategy, for to sow such confusion then reinforce it through channels, media, and authorities over us, the win is all but staged to convert what was once truth to a lie.

“Conspiracy theories” and unanswered questionings which might otherwise lead to rediscovery of those truths are deemed self-refuting and ridiculous.

And to avoid ridicule, the masses are lulled into consent to believe against what they’d once considered better judgment.

Winning you over, alienating you, and converting your zeal away from Christ to another gospel is the dastardly and insidious plan in action.

“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, the almighty Wizard of Oz has spoken!”

Hold fast to Truth as revealed by the One who is truly almighty.

This fight has only begun.

They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised–Romans 1:25

not enough.

I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2‬:‭21‬ ‭NIV‬‬

For most, keeping your nose clean, following the rules, and being a good person seems a solid path to whatever lies beyond this life.

Wouldn’t it be great if that’s all it took?

Gaining a righteousness just from observing the law as the Jews did will get you pretty far but not far enough.

That last step has long been a stumbling block but a necessary one for passage into eternal life.

No matter how much you may try, nobody ends up sinless.

Belief that Jesus was the Messiah sent by God to die and resurrect for us as payment for our sins is the final step over the threshold into the acceptance of God who can do anything but tolerate the presence of sin.

Be good and follow your rules, yes, but to understand that faith and belief in Jesus is the final chapter completing the story is a whole new revelation to which the entire new testament testifies.

haves and have nots.

All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In all cultures throughout history, there are the haves and the have nots.

The best measures of our humanity and civility are found in how we provide for the needs of others truly unable to adequately provide for themselves.

We are indeed our brother’s keepers (Gen 4) and the poor will always be with us (Matt 26.)

But poverty is no badge to be worn or an excuse for laziness. No matter the extent of their lack, they are always able and expected to contribute something in return if not for the common good then for their own sense of belonging in a caring community (Luke 21)

Everyone needs to be remembered and acknowledged whether their contribution is enormous or in comparison just a speck and even then, without such comparison.

Let’s not also forget that as the haves of this world, we should be “eager” in our quest to provide for the have nots, eagerly driven to find meaningful ways we can make a difference for them.

Don did a 180.

Am I trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭1‬:‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Going against the flow has consequences.

But like Paul, so does having a personal encounter with your creator.

The revelation changes your purpose and direction and suddenly you no longer fit the mold or destination of so many in this world.

My email address is dondida180@gmail.com and it was chosen years ago to proclaim to others my own change of heart and direction.

Don did a 180.

The swim against the tide is hard work and exhausting but necessary when God miraculously changes the destination of your life and soul.

I want to know I will someday hear those most pleasing words of all: Well done my good and faithful servant.

Disappointing others along the way in this life is a small price to pay for an eternity.

the day will come.

The day will come when we check our morning calendars for today or draft an email and give little to no immediate thought to the date in front of us or its historical significance.

Already, this newest generation has moved on to other critical issues and incidents which have formed their own 23 years of life and are likely to affect their next 23 and beyond.

It happens.

The pace of events and changing news cycles is dizzying these days and few are able to keep track of both history and present.

It will be left to a generation of elders who are quickly passing on and into oblivion themselves.

But the day will come when America forgets to mourn and a sad morning that will be when there are no more tears and never forget is forgotten.
